About GPSA
The Greater Peninsula Swimming Association (GPSA) is a summer recreational swim league serving youth swimmers on the Virginia Peninsula. Founded in the 1960s, GPSA has provided generations of swimmers with a fun, competitive environment to develop their skills and build lasting friendships.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to:
- Provide a safe, fun, and competitive swimming environment
- Develop swimming skills and sportsmanship in young athletes
- Foster community connections through team spirit
- Create positive summer experiences for families
League Structure
Divisions
GPSA is organized into three divisions based on team size and competitive balance:
- Red Division - Typically 6 teams
- White Division - Typically 6 teams
- Blue Division - Typically 5-6 teams
Divisions may be adjusted annually to maintain competitive balance.
Season Format
The GPSA season runs from mid-June through mid-July, featuring:
- Dual Meets - Weekly head-to-head competitions between two teams
- Division Meets - All teams in a division compete together
- Championship Meet - Season-ending championship (City Meet)
- Invitational Meets - Optional special events (Mini Meet, Summer Splash)
Age Groups
GPSA offers age groups for swimmers ages 5-18:

| 8 & Under | Swimmers 8 years old and younger |
| 9-10 | Swimmers ages 9-10 |
| 11-12 | Swimmers ages 11-12 |
| 13-14 | Swimmers ages 13-14 |
| 15-18 | Swimmers ages 15-18 |
Note: Age is determined as of June 1st of the current season.

GPSA currently includes teams from across the Virginia Peninsula, representing:
- Neighborhood pools
- Country clubs
- Recreation centers
- Community associations

Governance
GPSA is governed by:
- Executive Board - League officers elected by team representatives
- Team Representatives - One representative from each team
- Committee Chairs - Volunteers managing specific league functions
History
GPSA was founded in the 1960s when several neighborhood pools and country clubs came together to create a competitive summer swim league. Over the decades, the league has grown and evolved while maintaining its core mission of providing quality youth swimming experiences.
